The card at the right is the Old Man card from the Visconti-Sforza tarot deck. During the Player's recital about Pyrrhus and Priam, Polonius interrupts to complain that the recital is too long. Hamlet tells Polonius that it will go to the barber along with Polonius's beard. The old fellow in the picture has a long beard that needs a trip to the barber. Later, after the Mousetrap play, Polonius insistently tells Hamlet that Gertrude wants to talk to him, and Hamlet then mentions a camel to Polonius. Camels are known for having humps. The fellow on the card is hunch-backed from age. Although the card cannot be taken as correct for Polonius in every detail, it's suggestive of how Polonius would look. |
