The card at the right is the Visconti-Sforza Magician card, and the tarot Magician card was sometimes called the Mountebank card. While Claudius and Laertes are plotting to kill Hamlet, Laertes says he bought a deadly unction from a mountebank. The card illustration represents the mountebank with his table set up to do business, when he sold the poison to Laertes. |
