Here is the Visconti-Sforza Moon card. In speaking to Ophelia, Laertes said: The word "chary" is from Middle English chari, which meant "sorrowful." The word, chary, in more recent usage means "careful." The old meaning is more pertinent here. The maiden in the picture does have her face unmasked. She does not look happy. She is showing her beautiful, unmasked face to the moon, and sadly so, it appears. It's a prodigal, or wasteful, gesture for her to show her face to the moon. She ought to be showing her face to her lover. That's probably why she's sad, that her lover isn't there. I believe this card matches Laertes's remark quite nicely. The maiden in the picture would be Ophelia. |
